religion

con:
The phrase "separation of church and state" is not in the Constitution. The First Amendment to the Constitution states "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof..." This prevents the government from establishing a national church. However, it does not prevent God from being acknowledged in schools and government buildings.

Oppose the removal of symbols of Christian heritage from public and government spaces.

Government should not interfere with religion and religious freedom.

Lib:
Support the separation of church and state. Religious expression has no place in government.

Support the removal of all references to God in public and government spaces.

Religion should not interfere with government.

I think think that religion has no place in a government, especially since America is such a diverse place. Kids go to school to learn, not to practice religion, this should be practiced at home.

illegal immigration

con:
Support legal immigration at current numbers, but do not support illegal immigration. Government should enforce immigration laws. Oppose President Bush's amnesty plan for illegal immigrants. Those who break the law by entering the U.S. illegally should not have the same rights as those who obey the law by entering legally.

If there were a decrease in cheap, illegal immigrant labor, employers would have to substitute higher-priced domestic employees, legal immigrants, or perhaps increase mechanization.

lib:
Support legal immigration and increasing the number of legal immigrants permitted to enter the U.S. each year. Support blanket amnesty for current illegal immigrants.

Believe that regardless of how they came to the U.S., illegal immigrants deserve:
- U.S. government financial aid for college tuition.
- visas for spouse/children to come to the U.S. Families shouldn't be separated.

Illegal immigrants do the jobs that Americans do not want to do.

I have liberal beliefs on this topic, I think that very little can done to stop illegal immigration. A will not help at all and will needlessly waste money. I believe that we need more patrols and an easy way to immigrate to America.

gay marriage

CONS
Marriage is between one man and one woman.

Opinions differ on support for the creation of a constitutional amendment establishing marriage as the union of one man and one woman.

Believe that requiring citizens to sanction same-sex relationships violates moral and religious beliefs of millions of Christians, Jews, Muslims and others who believe marriage is the union of a man and a woman.

LIBS
Marriage should be legal for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender couples to ensure equal rights for all.

All individuals, regardless of their sex, have the right to marry.

Believe that prohibiting same-sex citizens from marrying denies them of their civil rights. Opinions differ on whether this issue is equal to civil rights for African Americans.

I have liberal beliefs on this topic, I think it is somebodies choice whether or not to marry someone. Marriage is how the person getting married defines it, not the government.

Abortion

CONSERVATIVES - believe in personal responsibility, limited government, free markets, individual liberty, traditional American values and a strong national defense. Believe the role of government should be to provide people the freedom necessary to pursue their own goals.

Conservative policies generally emphasize empowerment of the individual to solve problems.

LIBERALS - believe in governmental action to achieve equal opportunity and equality for all, and that it is the duty of the State to alleviate social ills and to protect civil liberties and individual and human rights. Believe the role of the government should be to guarantee that no one is in need. Believe that people are basically good.

Liberal policies generally emphasize the need for the government to solve people's problems.

I thought the presentation went quite well today, I have liberal beliefs on this topic. I believe that people should be able to make the choice, although I do also belief that certain things need to be stricter and more mandated.

Conservative vs. Liberal

Conservative vs. Liberal

Conservative and Liberal values are different and almost split the USA demographics in half. Conservative beliefs are less modern than Liberal, focusing on old long-held beliefs and usually tying in some way to religion. Conservatives do not believe in gay marriage or abortion. They also do not believe in illegal immigration.

Liberal views are more modern, focusing on laws that are pertinent to the new age. Liberals believe in gay-rights and gay marriage, and also believe in abortion (in most circumstances.) They also are more open to illegal immigrants.

peers and trends

"It's a shame that the people who are listening to you the most are only interested in you because they want you and your peers to buy their product."

I think this statement is true because companies are only interested in one thing: making money. They really have no interest in teenage individuals, but make themselves seem like they do in order to earn the consumers trust. Once the trust is earned, they get an inside view of upcoming trends and they can prepare themselves so that they are able to appeal to the largest possible audience once the trend becomes mainstream.

bright eyes lyrics

Gold Mine Gutted by Bright Eyes
"It was Don Delillo, whiskey neat,
And a blinking midnight clock
Speakers on a TV stand
Just a turntable to watch
Only smoke came out our mouths
On all those hooded sweatshirt walks
We were a stroke of luck
We were a gold mine, they gutted us

And from the sidelines you'd see me run
Until I'm out of breath
Living the good life, I left for dead
The sorrowful Midwest
Well I did my best...
To keep my head

It was grass stain jeans and incompletes
And a girl from class to touch
But you think about yourself too much
And you ruin who you love
Well all these claims at consciousness
My stray dog freedom
Let's have a nice clean cut
Like a bag we buy and divy up

And from the sidelines I see you run
Until you're out of breath
And all those white lines that sped us up
We hurried to our death
Well I lagged behind...
So you got ahead"

I believe that this song is about Connor Oberst's drug addiction. Although I have never dealt with drug addiction (unless you count caffeine) the song resonates with me because I think that the lyrics are really deep and I find it very interesting when artists talk so bluntly about things such as addiction. Lyrics like "all those white lines that sped us up...we hurried to our death...well i lagged behind...so you got ahead" leads me to believe that these lyrics mean that Connor stop doing Cocaine and managed to stop himself from dying, but his friend kept doing Cocaine and got closer and closer to dying. I am particularly fond of the line: "We were a gold mine, they gutted us." It is a very poetic line and probably means that "they" had a lot of potential when growing up, but somehow they lost all of that potential. Very good song Hjelmgren, download it now.
